Sentence is generally defined as a word or group of words that expresses a complete thought, by giving a statement/command, or by asking a question.

Simple Sentence – Introduction

Simple Sentences are those sentences in which no action is performed by the Subjects. There is no verb in simple sentences. Often through this sentence there is a sense of authority, position etc.

Like consider these sentences-

Ram has a book. (No work is being done here but right is being talked about. So it is a simple sentence.)

Ram is reading a book. (Here there is a work being done by "Ram" "reading" so it is not a simple sentence.)

Ram is happy (Even here no work is being done by the doer "Ram", it is just a stage. That's why it is a simple sentence.)

Sita is beautiful (Here also no work is being done by the doer "Sita". That's why it is a simple sentence.) Let's understand it through some examples....

Simple sentences Examples:–

Some more examples of simple sentences are given below to make it easier for you to understand-

you guys were happy. (There is no Action/Verb)

You guys were celebrating. (Verb is to celebrate, so it is not a simple sentence.)

Mohan was sad. (no action)

Mohan will have a car. (not a verb but a matter of authority)

Mohan is driving the car. (The verb in this sentence is to drive, so it is not a simple sentence.

Sohan is kind. (No Verb is happening here)

Sohan's father is a farmer. (is not a verb)

Sohan is a student. (Here also what the subject is doing has not been told, so it is a simple sentence)

Mohan was ill. (no verb)

The cup is on the table. (no work is going on here)

Sohan has two brothers. (no work is going on here)

He has three sisters. (no action)

He is a slacker. (no work is going on here)

He was with me (no verb)

He was good at math.(No Verb)

He also spoke English. (Verb is speaking, so it is not a simple sentence.)

Types of Simple sentences in English-

There are three types of simple sentences.

1. Present simple sentences

2. Past simple sentences

3. Future simple sentences


Present Simple sentences tense:-

Such a simple sentence, which gives understanding of the present time, is called Present simple sentences.

Helping verb is, am, are, have and has are used to form Present Simple sentences.

Affirmative Sentences:-

  • He is Ram.
  • He is the father of Ram.
  • Ram is a student.
  • I am happy.
  • Those people are sad.
  • I have a ca.
  • He has two brothers.
  • Those people are slackers.
  • I'm not weak.

Negative Sentences:-

  • He is not Ram.
  • He is not Ram's father.
  • Ram is not a student.
  • I am not happy.
  • Those people are not sad.
  • I don't have a car.
  • He doesn't have two brothers. 
  • Sita is not fickle. 
  • Mukesh is not sharp.

Interrogative Sentences:-

  • Is that Ram? - 
  • Is he the father of Ram?
  • Is Ram a student?
  • am i happy?
  • Aren't they sad?
  • Don't have a car?
  • Does he have two brothers?
  • do you have a pen?

Wh-question sentences(Wh-questions sentences):-

  • why am i happy?
  • Why are they sad?
  • Why don't I have a car?
  • Why don't you have a pen? – Why do you not have a pen?
  • Why is Rahul happy?
  • Why is Subhash not Tej? 


Past Simple sentences:-

Such a simple sentence which gives the sense of the elapsed time is called Past simple sentences. 

Helping verbs were, were and had are used to form Past Simple sentences.

Affirmative Sentences:-

  • I was happy.
  • Those people were sad.
  • He was dishonest.
  • I had cows.
  • Those people were calm.
  • The children were hungry.

Negative Sentences:-

  • I was not happy.
  • They weren't sad.
  • She was not sick.
  • Those people did not have four cows. 
  • Kusum was not a playful girl.
  • Ram's brother was not a thief.

Interrogative Sentences:-

  • was he happy?
  • Were they sad?
  • Was Sita silent?

Interrogative-Negative Sentences:-

  • Was Kundan's brother not honest?
  • Don't you have two laptops?
  • Did Ram have an elephant?

Wh-Interrogative sentences(Wh- Interrogative sentences):-

  • Why was he not happy?
  • When were they sad?
  • where was i sick?
  • Why did you have two mobiles?

Wh-Interrogative–Interrogative sentences:-

  • Why was Karthik not calm?
  • Why didn't Shushant have a watch?

Future Simple sentences:-

Such a simple sentence in which there is a sense of the time to come is called Future simple sentences.

Helping verbs will be and will have are used to form Future Simple sentences.

Affirmative Sentences:-

  • Children will be in school.
  • Bharti will be at home.
  • He will have two dogs.
  • There will be a window in the room.
  • Ram will have two brothers.

Negative Sentences:-

  • She won't be happy.
  • Those people will not be sad.
  • His brother will not be a thief.
  • He won't be smart.
  • Akanksha will not have four cows.

Interrogative Sentences:-

  • Will that be Ram?
  • Will he be the father of Ram?
  • Will Ram be a student?
  • will i be happy?

Interrogative-Negative Sentences:-

  • Won't she be happy?
  • Won't they be sad?
  • Wouldn't he have two acres of land?
  • Won't he be rich?

Wh-Interrogative sentences(Wh- Interrogative sentences):-

  • How will he have two houses?
  • Why will Savita be ill?

Wh-Interrogative–Interrogative sentences:-
