A word defines a language sound, or a mixture of two or more word sounds, both in written and spoken form. A word works as a symbol to represent/refer to something/someone in the language to communicate a specific meaning.

Example:

'love', 'cricket', 'sky' etc. "Word" is the     smallest unit of grammar that can stand   alone as a complete utterance,   separated by spaces in written   language."

What is Morphology?

Morphology, a branch of science, which studies the formation of words. The branch of linguistics in which the meaning of words is studied is called lexical semantics.

There are many criteria for speech sound, or some sentence, combination of sounds is called a word.

There should be a possible pause in speech and a space in writing between two words. For example, suppose 'ball' and 'bat' are two different words.

Therefore, if we use them in a sentence, we must have a possible pause after pronouncing each of them. Another example:- It can't be like "Idonotplaywithbatball".

If we pause, these sounds can be thought of as eight separate words that are 'I,' 'do,' 'not,' 'play,' 'with,' 'bat,' and 'ball.

Every word must have at least one root. If you break this root, it cannot remain a word. For example, the root of the word 'Honesty' is 'faith'. If we break 'Honest' into 'Ho', 'ne' and 'st', then these sounds will not be considered as words. So every word must have a meaning. For example, the sound 'Takkana' has no meaning in the English language. So, it cannot be an English word.
